Registering without approval

All examinees (except Arizona, Michigan, and Utah examinees): Contact your state board and apply for approval before registering with ELSES. There may be an application fee. If you are retaking the exam, you must contact your state board and verify your approval status. If you fail to follow the necessary procedures with your state board and register with ELSES without approval, you will forfeit your exam fee and you will not be allowed to take the examination.

State board contact information is listed at http://www.ncees.org/licensure/licensing_boards/.

NOTE: Arizona PE and FE examinees, Michigan PE and FE examinees, and all Utah examinees: Do not contact your state board for approval, but go directly to the Arizona, Michigan, or Utah registration page for approval and registration information for your state.

Arranging to take an exam out of state (proctor request).

The deadline for April 2008 proctor requests has passed.

Once you have been approved by your board to take the exam, have registered for the exam, and have paid your exam fees, only then may you arrange proctoring services to take the exam at an out-of-state location. Therefore, arranging to proctor an examination is separate from registering for the examination.

To register for an exam and pay your exam fee, visit your state page on this Web site. To request proctoring services to take your exam in a location outside your state, complete the ELSES proctor request form. Not all states allow proctoring; the table below shows the proctoring policy for each ELSES state.

Proctoring services require a $100 non-refundable/non-transferable proctoring fee. ELSES will notify you of how to pay the $100 proctoring fee once your request is received and approved.

It is your responsibility to follow up with ELSES to confirm receipt of your request as well as the $100 proctor payment. ELSES may charge processing fees for any problem collections.

Reference materials

Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) and Principles and Practice of Surveying (PS) examinations

The PE and PS are both open-book examinations. You should bring an approved calculator with you. Refer to the Candidate Agreement for a detailed list of items allowed or prohibited in the exam room.

Frequently asked questions:

1. I have heard that a three-ring binder is considered bound. Is this true?

Yes, as long as all pages of your notes, tables, etc., remain in the binder for the duration of the examination. If they are removed from the binder, a proctor will consider that to be loose paper, it will be confiscated, you will be dismissed from the exam, and your exam will not be scored.

2. If I forget a reference manual in my car, can I go get it?

Not during the examination. If you leave the building, you will not be permitted to return to the exam room.

3. May I bring in an NCEES Sample Questions and Solutions Book for open-book exams?

Yes, as long as it is bound and remains bound for the duration of the examination.

4. Are penciled notes allowed?

Yes, but be aware that proctors are trained to look for examinees who may be writing exam questions in their materials to take home.  Be sure to put your pencil down while handling your study materials.

5. Do I have to use a clear plastic bag to bring in my reference materials?

No. This policy applies only to examinees taking closed-book examinations, such as the FE and FS. You may bring your materials in any suitable container. Please note that not all exam locations have elevators or ramps, and you will not be provided assistance.

6. Are tabs and page markers allowed?

Yes, you may use tabs and page markers in the open-book exams.  We recommend using the self-adhesive flags that look like cellophane tape with colored ends. All tabs and page markers must be affixed before you enter the exam room.

Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) and Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examinations

The FE and FS are both closed-book examinations, and examinees are not permitted to bring reference materials of any kind to the exam room. You should bring an approved calculator with you. All other supplies or material needed for the FE/FS examination will be provided to you. Refer to the Candidate Agreement for a detailed list of items allowed or prohibited in the exam room.

ATTENTION:
  • Page markers, including self-adhesive tabs and sticky notes, are not permitted in closed-book exams.
  • Book bags and purses are not permitted. Any personal items must be contained in a clear plastic bag; opaque bags such as the green, blue, yellow, white, or brown plastic bags used by grocery stores are not allowed.
